What to Do After a Winter Weather Car Accident

Posted By Gruenberg Kelly Della || 20-Nov-2020

Staying Safe on New York’s Winter Roads

Between the harsh storms, bitter cold, and early sunsets, there is a considerable risk for auto accidents during New York winters. If you fall victim to an accident, the season’s conditions could spell trouble if you’re unprepared. Follow these steps to stay safe.

How to Stay Safe on the Road

When conditions are especially bad, you should limit your driving to trips that are absolutely essential. If you do take to the road, be sure to:

  • Choose main streets more likely to be plowed
  • Clear snow off your window before you start driving
  • Drive at a speed which is safe for current conditions
  • Keep a safety kit in your car in case of an emergency
  • Keep your vehicle full of at least half a tank of gas
  • Leave extra distance between you and the car in front of you

These small steps could make a big difference in protecting you and other drivers.

What to Do if You Are Stranded

If you find yourself unable to continue driving, either due to a collision or other emergency, you must take additional steps to remain safe and warm until help can arrive. If you are stranded, you should:

  • Ensure your exhaust pipe is unclogged
  • Keep the interior lights on
  • Put on all the layers of clothing available in your car to stay warm
  • Stagger engine use to conserve fuel, meaning you should only keep the car on long enough to warm you up
  • Stay inside your car

If you or a loved one were involved in a winter weather accident caused by another driver’s negligence, contact Gruenberg Kelly Della. We will help you fight for fair compensation for your injuries.
