According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
“Rear-end crashes are the most frequently occurring type of collision, accounting
for approximately 29 percent of all crashes and resulting in a substantial
number of injuries and fatalities each year.”
In 2018, there were
2,439 rear-end accidents, and rear-end collisions accounted for 7.2% of fatal crashes.
What Causes Rear-End Accidents?
Unfortunately,
rear-end accidents are frequently the result of distracted driving. If the rear driver fails
to pay attention, they will be unable to brake in time to prevent an accident.
Other common causes of rear-end accidents include:
- Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
- Speeding
- Tailgating
- Drowsy driving
- Reckless driving
- Weather conditions
In most situations, the rear driver is at fault for rear-end crashes. Exceptions
may exist, however, if the lead driver reverses, drives erratically, or
has broken taillights.
A Note About Technology
As crash prevention and mitigation technologies improve, rear-end collisions
may become less frequent. Some vehicles brake automatically when drivers
are distracted, and others alert drivers when they are too close to other vehicles.
Still, technology can present problems, as well. Although cell phones improve
our lives in countless ways, texting and driving is one of the most dangerous
distracted driving behaviors and causes many rear-end crashes.
Reading or sending a text behind the wheel is similar to driving the length
of a football field with your eyes closed. Always stay focused on the
road, and if a distracted driver causes an accident, don’t be afraid
to hold them liable for their behavior.
